Teens (13- to 18-year-olds) now spend nearly nine hours a day interacting with media. Most of that (six hours and forty-five minutes) is screen time. That’s forty-seven hours of screen time a week—more than a standard full-time job.
Teens send, on average, one hundred texts a day.5 Half of American teens describe themselves as “addicted” to their phones, and 60 percent of parents say their teens are addicted to their phones.6 Among social networking sites, Facebook remains the most popular, but the majority of teens today maintain a “social media portfolio” of multiple sites that include Instagram (52 percent), Snapchat (41 percent), Twitter (33 percent), Google+ (33 percent), Vine (24 percent), and Tumblr (14 percent).7
Six out of ten American children who are 8 or under watch television every day. Among kids 8 to 18, nearly three-quarters watch TV for an average of two and a half hours a day. An estimated one-third of children ages 2 to 7 have their own TVs. So do half of all tweens and 60 percent of teenagers.8
